Frequently Asked Questions

Vallarta Food Tours FAQ's

PUERTO VALLARTAʼS ORIGINAL FOOD &

CULTURE TOURS

Taste your way through Vallartaʼs neighborhoods with authentic dishes, local stories, and unforgettable flavors.

. What is a food tour?

A food tour is a guided culinary and cultural experience where you visit several local restaurants, taco stands, markets, and specialty food shops. Along the way, your guide shares the stories behind the food, neighborhoods, traditions, and people that make Puerto Vallarta unique.

What foods will we try? Are drinks included?

Every tour features a carefully curated selection of authentic local specialties from family-owned restaurants, street food vendors, and hidden gems. While menu items vary slightly based on seasonality and vendor availability, you can expect generous tastings that add up to a satisfying meal. Most tours also include a selection of local beverages, and some tours feature alcoholic drinks. Check the individual tour page for what's included.

Can Vallarta Food Tours accommodate dietary restrictions?

We do our best to accommodate many dietary needs, including vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free, and certain food allergies, when we receive advance notice. Because we partner with small local businesses and many traditional dishes are prepared using family recipes, we may not be able to accommodate every restriction. Please let us know your dietary needs when booking, and we'll advise you on the best tour for your group.

How much walking is involved?

Our walking food tours are designed to be enjoyable for most guests and typically involve a leisurely walk through Puerto Vallarta's neighborhoods with plenty of stops along the way. Most tours cover approximately 1–2 miles (1.5–3 km) over 3–4 hours, with opportunities to sit, eat, and rest throughout. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing sunscreen and water. If you need less walking, we suggest our van tours!

What's your cancellation policy?

We offer a hassle free full refund for cancellations made at least 24 hours in advance. Cancellations within 24 hours of the tour start time are non-refundable but we can turn it into a gift certificate with no expiration even 1 hour before the tour!

How much food is included?

Come hungry! Most of our tours include 6–10 food tastings, depending on the tour. The portions are designed to add up to a satisfying meal for most guests.

Are drinks included?

Water is provided or available throughout our tours. Some tours also include alcoholic beverages or traditional Mexican drinks. Our Mexology Tours are specifically designed around both craft cocktails and food. Also most tours there is a drink ticket or you can always pay on your own as well.

Can you accommodate gluten-free guests?

Many Mexican dishes are naturally made with corn rather than wheat, so we can accommodate gluten-free guests on several tours. However, we cannot guarantee completely gluten-free preparation or prevent cross-contamination.

Are your tours suitable for children?

Absolutely. Families are welcome on most of our food tours. Our daytime taco and food tours are especially popular with families. Some cocktail-focused experiences have age restrictions, so please check the individual tour description.

Do children need a ticket?

Yes. Because children participate in the tastings and take a space in the group, they generally require a ticket from ages 5-12 . Toddlers are free of charge. Pricing and age requirements vary by tour.

. Are the tours wheelchair accessible?

Accessibility varies significantly by tour because Puerto Vallarta has cobblestone streets, uneven sidewalks, curbs, and small local restaurants. Please contact us before booking and we'll help determine the best option for your group.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended. Puerto Vallarta can be hot and humid, so lightweight clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also helpful.

Yes! You can purchase your tour with cash at our office, located at Avenida México 1193, and receive 10% off your ticket price. Cash tickets can be purchased anytime before your tour and are subject to availability.

Who are your tour guides?

Our team is one of the things we're most proud of. It's a diverse group of federally licensed tour guides, chefs, mixologists, food experts, and local historians, each bringing their own expertise and personality to our tours.

Our guides go through extensive training and continue learning about Puerto Vallarta's food, history, culture, architecture, and traditions throughout their time with us.

How experienced are your tour guides?

Very! Our guides have been with Vallarta Food Tours for an average of more than six years, giving our team an exceptional level of experience and local knowledge. Our oldest has been with us for 12 years and the youngest 3 years..

We have very little guide turnover because we believe in building careers, not just filling tour schedules. That means many of the guides leading our tours today have spent years developing relationships with our restaurant partners and learning the stories behind the neighborhoods and food we share.

How do you support your tour guides?

We believe the people creating your experience should share in the company's success. Our guides receive some of the best compensation in the local tour industry, ongoing professional training, and company profit sharing.

Taking care of our team has helped us build a passionate, experienced group of guides who stay with us for years—and we believe guests can feel that difference on every tour.

Why choose Vallarta Food Tours?

We've been introducing visitors to the food and culture of Puerto Vallarta since 2011. We're proud to be the #1-rated tour in Puerto Vallarta on Tripadvisor, with more than 8,400 reviews, as well as an award-winning food tour company recognized locally, nationally, and internationally.

But what really sets us apart is the experience. Rather than simply taking you to restaurants, we introduce you to the local families, dishes, neighborhoods, traditions, and stories that make Puerto Vallarta special. We work with locally owned establishments and never choose a stop because it pays us a commission.

Our goal is simple: help you experience Puerto Vallarta like a local.
